About

A little about me

Hello My name is Jim Kiely.

I'll start with where I came from. My Father was an Irish born Canadian immigrant and my mother from a northern Ontario french speaking community. I spent my early days on a rural 10 acre property in East Gwillimbury's  ward one.  At age eight I moved to a farm in Georgina.  Farm life was  great to me, it came with chores and responsibilities, this along with good parenting helped to form good solid values and work ethics. I moved from the farm to my current   Morton avenue home in East gwillimbury ward two, specifically Sharon. This is where I've called home for the last 27 years. Me,  along with my wife Kim, and  twin daughters whom we raised there.

The building we bought  was a derelict church made redundant by its larger newer replacement in Newmarket. It may have been outdated as a church but with a vision and some elbow grease it makes a great home. Complete with a welcoming vibe and it's a great conversation starter. But who would have thought the first building I bought  would be my forever home. Well maybe that has something to do with its great location. I’ve made my career as a construction contractor taking on projects in residential and commercial applications from renovations to breaking ground on new builds. My job involves tasks like  managing permits, projects, estimates, budgets, timelines & subtrades. All  the time while keeping  clients current and informed. I do this with honesty and transparency. I guess this and good workmanship is why I have such a loyal client base.

That would bring you to current me. My house is built, my kids have grown. I have a good job where I  set my own hours. The time is right for me to get more involved in my community.

The role of a councillor

The role of a Counsillor

A councilor's job is to represent residents and businesses in their ward. For the role of representing residents you have to make yourself visible and accessible to the community. This means meeting and listening to residents in day to day life, at community events and by request .Well I can definitely check that box. I love  being social, meeting people, chatting and learning about them. As long as I listen, retain and represent what I hear, that role is a pleasure I look forward to too. I also take interest  in the complexities a councilor is responsible for. Analyzing and critiquing the services our town provides. For example is East Gwillimbury cost effective and efficient in the areas of waste collection, snow removal, supplying clean water and sufficient public transit. These are essential services for everyone. East Gwillimbury's citizens are young to old, and come from near and far. Maybe it's the family man in me that asks if everybody is getting what they need. Senior programs to summer camps. Sports and recreation. Education and entertainment. these areas are under constant development. Then there is my construction background  that draws me to community infrastructure. For the majority I think we are in decent shape, aside from the discomfort of living thru major road construction projects, or the massive wall to wall crack in the floor of our town hall. seriously though construction and maintenance of our buildings roads and equipment is a regular subject for the town. although These concerns don't fall directly on councilors shoulders it's a topic I look forward to discussing with fellow council and administration staff. There are many topics to be discussed like Town standards and safety requirements. with the growth we are experiencing At what point do we require another fire station or a High school, and are we putting enough into our policing budget. Are our by laws out dated? Do we need a discussion on air b&b or property zoning?. The third role of a councilor is what they call stewardship. This means to manage, look after and protect something for somebody else. You are electing someone to represent you in your absence. Someone to monitor and review  annual operating costs and the seriousness of where our property taxes are being spent. Are you getting proper value for your tax dollar? Councilors are supposed to be watch dogs, evaluating town administration and staff operations. With my years of experience as a business owner I believe the job of town councilor is something I will excel at and I am asking for your support to let me prove it.

East Gwillimbury is ranked as the fastest growing municipality in Canada. We have grown and are going to continue to grow. The ball is in motion, things are happening. I am not selling you a belief that I am going to fix the town or that you need me. The reality is the growth bubble has reached us and development is inevitable, so let's embrace the fact that we are booming in commercial and residential growth. Let's enjoy the benefits that come with growth. Let's build a community that we enjoy living in. a community where family life flourishes and we are proud to call home.

I've always had a desire to get involved in local politics and now I find myself with the time and ability to put my head and heart into it. I am here to ask for your trust and support in my journey to be East Gwillimbury's next ward two councillor, and I'm promising you responsible, accountable, dependable community representation in our municipal office.

                                                                                                       Thank you. Jim Kiely.
